Astana, Kazakhstan, Tlendiyeva Street (A-40 + SMA-20 with Veleton MPC)
On the section of Tlendiyeva Street the services were carrying out medium repair with milling at least 2 times a year. The left lane worked as a braking zone for heavy goods vehicles ahead of the traffic lights, and the design loads were exceeded more than 3 times over.
The client set the contractor AstanaAvtoStroy the task of solving the problem on this section and creating a reference for future comparable sites.
Veleton technologists studied the section and adjusted the composition of the mixture and the dosages of the components in order to substantially increase the resistance of the pavement to rutting.
Dry addition of Veleton MPC into the asphalt mixer was used, without modifying the bitumen beforehand, for the A-40 lower course and the SMA-20 surface course.
Veleton specialists provided a survey of the section, adjustment of the composition of the lower and surface course mixtures, selection of the component dosages, the full cycle of adding Veleton MPC into the mixer, control of the polymer distribution, setting of the temperature regimes, and support of production, paving and compaction.
The section has been in service for over 2 years without medium repair, whereas previously repair was carried out at least 2 times a year.
The compressive strength of the pavement increased by 70-90% compared with sections where conventional bitumen modification was used.
Using Veleton MPC in two courses of the pavement strengthened the structure on a section exposed to extreme braking action by heavy goods vehicles. The site can serve as an example for comparable braking zones and traffic light sections.
Over 250,000 USD is freed up for the Astana budget by doing away with regular repairs on the section.
