Necesidad

Moskovskaya Street is not an arterial road but an active urban street: approaches to schools and services, frequent stops and turns, parking along the kerb. This driving pattern, with low speeds, braking and pulling away, creates shear loads and shoving at bus stops, particularly in summer when the pavement heats up.

The task was to increase the resistance of the surface course at bus stops, pedestrian crossings, lay-bys and junctions.

Solución Veleton

An SMA-20 mixture with the Veleton MPC polymer additive was used to repair the surface course, the additive being introduced at the asphalt plant by dry addition into the mixer.

Together with the contractor, the grading and the target air void content of the mixture were refined, the temperature regimes for production and paving were agreed, along with compaction control at bus stops, pedestrian crossings and junctions.

Veleton specialists provided an audit of the materials, adjustment of the SMA-20 mixture composition, the full cycle of adding Veleton MPC into the mixer, control of the even distribution of the polymer, setting of the temperature regimes, support of production at the asphalt plant, and support of paving and compaction at the site.

At the site the technologist inspects and records how the mixture compacts and behaves during paving.

El resultado en cifras

The section has been in service for over 2 seasons without medium repair. The pavement is visually even, with no waves or shoving at the lay-bys and bus stops.

Rutting resistance increased by 200-230% relative to the base mixture without modification.

In Hamburg Wheel Tracking testing the rut depth was 1.5-1.6 mm / 20,000 passes.

Efecto adicional

Veleton MPC increased the shear resistance of the matrix and made it possible for the pavement to hold its shape under stop-start driving. The case is particularly telling for streets with local loads at bus stops, crossings, parking and junctions.

Efecto para el presupuesto

The projected funds freed up on patch repairs are 120-180 thousand USD a year, through a reduced frequency of local interventions.
