Rustaveli Avenue is one of the main urban arteries of Tashkent. The middle lane works as a bus lane, a separate lane for passenger buses, where the loads on the roadbed exceed the standard figures several times over.
Traffic intensity is high. A further factor in the deterioration is the absence of shade: in summer the pavement surface heats to +70 °C, which accelerates the formation of ruts and plastic deformation.
The task was to increase the resistance of the surface course to rutting on a section carrying constant bus loads and high thermal exposure.
A dense SMA-20 mixture was used for the surface course, modified with the Veleton MPC polymer additive by dry addition directly into the asphalt mixer, without modifying the bitumen beforehand.
Together with the client's technologists, Veleton specialists adjusted the composition of the mixture and the dosage of the polymer additive, agreed the temperature regimes at the asphalt plant and ensured process control at the paving site. Dry addition made it possible to introduce the modification without separate PMB production and without changing the plant's logistics.
Veleton specialists provided an audit of the incoming materials, adjustment of the SMA-20 mixture composition, selection of the Veleton MPC dosage, the full cycle of adding the additive into the asphalt mixer, control of the even distribution of the polymer, agreement of the temperature regimes, support of production at the asphalt plant and process control at the paving site.
Rutting resistance increased by more than 300% compared with conventional bitumen modification.
In Hamburg Wheel Tracking testing the rut depth was 1.45 mm / 20,000 passes.
The projected effect for the city akimat's budget is over 500,000 USD a year freed up through fewer pavement repairs.
The technology proved effective on a section carrying increased bus loads and summer pavement heating to +70 °C. Representatives of the Uzavtoyul road authority proposed scaling this method of modifying asphalt mixture to other sites carrying increased loads on the pavement.
For the city akimat, over 500,000 USD a year is projected to be freed up through a reduced need for pavement repairs.
