The repair of the section of the R-70 highway had to increase the durability of the pavement: to provide firm adhesion of the bitumen to the aggregate and at the same time to increase the rutting resistance of the asphalt through polymer modification.
Combined modification was carried out at the client's asphalt plant. The Veleton adhesion additive, at a dosage of 0.4% by weight of the bitumen, was added directly into the tank from above, which proved more convenient and more accurate than the traditional route through an intermediate bucket.
The AVE18 polymer additive was used to modify the MZ/B-20 mixture. The plant used a colloid mill, which speeded up the process and made the result consistent, although the standard scheme needs only 175 °C, 2 hours and ordinary agitators.
Veleton specialists provided an audit and selection of the optimal additive dosages, support of the modification at the asphalt plant, control of the temperature regimes and of the quality of the mixture produced, and sampling of the bitumen and the mixture for further laboratory testing.
Good adhesion of the bitumen to the aggregate was confirmed by the absence of any issues with the samples.
The labour involved in the dosing operations was reduced by 30-40%.
The projected increase in the service life of the pavement is 2-3 years thanks to the combined modification.
The client gained a more convenient process for adding the adhesion additive: one operator instead of two. Modification time was also reduced by using AVE18 through the mill, and the pavement gained both improved adhesion and increased resistance to loads.
The expected funds freed up on repairs are up to 150,000 USD over the service period of the section.
