Odessa, Ukraine, entrance from the M14 highway (repair of a heavily loaded section with Veleton MPC)
One of the entrances to Odessa from the M14 highway was working under extreme loads: a constant flow of heavy goods vehicles, frequent braking and intensive rut formation.
A further constraint was the thermal window from 10:00 to 22:00. The whole volume of pavement that had been cut out had to be restored the same day. The key task was to carry out the repair quickly and well and to open the section to heavy traffic by 22:00, without storing or heating polymer-modified bitumen.
Dry modification of the mixture with Veleton MPC was used for the repair. The solution made it possible to produce modified asphalt in small batches, 2-5 truckloads, directly to match the paving under way.
This removed the risks of storing PMB, holding its temperature and preparing large volumes in advance.
Veleton specialists provided selection of the mixture composition for a section with heavy goods traffic, production of the modified mixture in small batches to match the paving, control of the temperature regimes for production and paving, support of paving, checking of compactability and quality control of the pavement on site.
The repair was completed within the 10:00-22:00 thermal window. The section was opened to traffic the same day and immediately took heavy traffic with no additional restrictions.
After a year in service the pavement retains its resistance under a constant flow of goods vehicles.
Rutting resistance increased 3 times compared with the ordinary mixture.
Veleton MPC made it possible to carry out the repair to a tight deadline with no risk of losing quality. The key effect is the ability to work in small batches matched to the actual paving and not to depend on storing polymer-modified bitumen.
Veleton MPC increased the cost of the mixture by 10-12%. The return on investment was achieved in the first month of service through reduced risk of rework and by doing away with the additional costs of logistics, storage and heating of PMB. Up to 20,000 USD is freed up on each comparable site.
“Time was critical for us: the road had to open that same evening. Veleton's technology let us carry out the repair promptly and reliably. The section takes the goods traffic without any trouble.”
