
Astana, Kazakhstan, Turan Avenue (SMA-20 with Veleton MPC)
Turan Avenue is one of the main arterial roads of Astana, running through the central part of the city. The section operates under very high traffic loads, and the absence of greenery and shade leads to severe overheating of the pavement in summer.
In summer the road surface on the arterial road heats above 65 °C. Under these conditions the surface course quickly lost stability, ruts formed, and the road services had to carry out medium repair with milling practically every year.
The task was to extend the service life of the surface course, increase rutting resistance and reduce the frequency of closures of the central arterial road without changing the asphalt plant's logistics.
A dense SMA-20 mixture was used for the surface course, modified with the Veleton MPC polymer additive by dry addition directly into the asphalt mixer.
The solution made it possible to do without modifying the bitumen beforehand, to keep the plant's standard process cycle and to introduce the modification with no separate PMB handling.
Together with the contractor's technologists, Veleton specialists adjusted the composition of the mixture, agreed the temperature regimes for production and paving, and ensured process control at the asphalt plant and at the paving site.
Veleton specialists provided an audit of the incoming materials, adjustment of the SMA-20 mixture composition, the full cycle of adding Veleton MPC into the mixer, control of the even distribution of the polymer, setting of the temperature regimes, support of production at the asphalt plant, and support of paving and compaction at the site.
The condition of the pavement is monitored by the KazDorNII research institute.
The section has been in service for over 2 years without medium repair, whereas previously repair with milling was carried out practically every year. The pavement is in good condition.
Rutting resistance increased by more than 300% compared with conventional bitumen modification.
In Hamburg Wheel Tracking testing the rut depth was 0.96 mm / 20,000 passes.
Using Veleton MPC made it possible to reduce the need for frequent closures of one of the city's central arterial roads and to lessen the traffic congestion associated with repair works. The key effect is a stable surface course on a section with high traffic and summer pavement overheating above 65 °C.
Over 500,000 USD a year is freed up for the municipality through fewer repair interventions and closures of the central arterial road.
