The section of road on Tole Bi Street operates under extremely high traffic. The separate lane for public transport creates constant repeated loads, and the pavement was breaking up 3-4 times faster than normal.
Climatic factors made the situation worse: with no shade, the pavement surface heated to +68 °C in summer. The municipality had to carry out medium and major repair at least twice a year. The task was to increase the resistance of the pavement to rutting and plastic deformation on a section with intensive bus traffic, overheating and regular repair intervention.
An A-40 mixture was used for the lower course and SMA-20 for the surface course. Both courses were modified with the Veleton MPC polymer additive by dry addition directly into the asphalt mixer.
Veleton specialists, together with the client's team, adjusted the composition of the mixture, agreed the temperature regimes and monitored the processes at the asphalt plant and at the paving site. The solution made it possible to do without modifying the bitumen beforehand and to speed up production.
Veleton specialists provided an audit of the materials, selection of the mixture composition, the full cycle of adding Veleton MPC into the asphalt mixer for the lower and the surface course, control of the even distribution of the polymer, adjustment of the mixing parameters, setting of the temperature regimes, support at the plant and during paving, and control of every stage of construction through to completion.
The section has been in service for over 2 years without repairs instead of two millings a year. Rutting resistance increased by 300% compared with conventional modification.
By the Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test method the rut depth was 1.05 mm / 20,000 passes, against 4-5 mm with other additives. The initial 10-20% increase in the cost of the asphalt gave the municipality a return on investment of 200-300% over 2-3 years.
Veleton's technology made it possible to stabilise the pavement on a section with a bus lane, extreme loads and overheating to +68 °C. The key effect is the absence of repairs for more than 2 years on a road that previously required two interventions a year.
For the municipality the effect on the budget is 300,000 USD a year freed up through fewer repairs. Over 2-3 years the return on investment was 200-300%.
