Kharkiv Region, Ukraine, Martovoe (major repair of a highway with SBS-modified bitumen)
A major repair of the pavement was carried out on a section of highway in the area of Martovoe. The previous pavement had pronounced rutting and a network of cracks, which reduced the comfort and the safety of traffic.
The task was to obtain a more durable pavement, resistant to intensive traffic, to rutting and to cracking.
Fine-grained asphalt on modified bitumen with an SBS content of 3.2% was used for the surface course.
This solution increases the elasticity of the mixture, improves crack resistance and increases the resistance of the pavement to rutting under high loads.
Veleton specialists provided quality control of the modified bitumen on discharge, support of the preparation and paving of the mixture, checking of the temperature regimes and of compactability at the site, and advice to the contractor on optimising the process.
Paving went without any issues raised by the client. The pavement showed an even structure and high compactability.
The projected increase in the service life of the pavement is up to +40-50% relative to unmodified asphalt.
SBS modification made it possible to strengthen the surface course on a section where the previous pavement was breaking up because of rutting and cracks. The key effect is higher elasticity and crack resistance of the pavement, with no issues at the paving stage.
The funds potentially freed up through reduced medium repair costs are up to 100,000 USD over the life cycle of the section. The additional cost of the bitumen due to SBS modification is offset within 2-3 years.
“The works went as normal and the paving was without any issues. We expect the highway at Martovoe to last considerably longer than usual now.”
