Astana, Kazakhstan, Mangilik El Avenue (central arterial road to the airport, using dry addition of the Veleton MPC additive)
Mangilik El Avenue is a central urban arterial road with intensive traffic and an important route towards the airport. The section operates under high traffic loads, and in summer the pavement additionally overheats because of the high temperatures.
Previously the surface course required frequent repairs because of severe rutting. The main task was to increase the resistance of the pavement to plastic deformation, keep the surface course stable and introduce the solution without changing the contractor's usual logistics.
Instead of modifying the bitumen beforehand, the Veleton polymer additive was introduced by dry addition directly into the asphalt mixer.
Together with the contractor, Veleton specialists refined the composition of the mixture, set the production regimes and strengthened control at the asphalt plant and during paving and compaction. The solution was introduced without stopping the plant and without changing the contractor's working logistics.
Veleton specialists provided an audit of the incoming materials, adjustment of the mixture composition, the full cycle of adding the additive into the mixer, control of the even distribution of the polymer, setting of the temperature regimes, support of production at the asphalt plant, and support of paving and compaction at the site.
The section has been in service for almost 3 construction seasons without medium repair. The pavement is in stable condition.
Resistance to rutting increased by 250-280% relative to the base mixture without modification.
In Hamburg Wheel Tracking testing the rut depth was 1.3 mm / 20,000 passes.
The Veleton polymer additive created a structure in the mineral skeleton that is more resistant to shear. This reduced plastic deformation under heat and repeated loads. The key effect is a stable surface course on a central arterial road with intensive traffic and a route to the airport.
350-400 thousand USD a year is freed up for the city through less frequent milling, fewer closures and the associated traffic delays.
