Kyiv, Ukraine, Severny Bridge (A-20 surface course with Veleton MPC)
Severny Bridge is one of the key transport arteries of Kyiv, working daily under extreme loads because of intensive traffic. Before the Veleton solution was applied, the services had to carry out routine repair of the pavement at least once a year.
A further factor in the deterioration was the heat: in summer the pavement surface warmed to +65 °C, which accelerated the formation of ruts and cracks.
A dense fine-grained A-20 with the Veleton MPC polymer additive was used for the surface course, introduced by dry addition directly into the asphalt mixer, without modifying the bitumen beforehand.
The solution made it possible to avoid a separate modification process, keep production flexible and introduce the technology at the site without delay.
Veleton specialists provided an audit of the incoming materials and adjustment of the mixture composition, agreement of the temperature regimes, control of production at the asphalt plant, support of paving, quality control of the pavement and regular monitoring of the site's condition together with the city services.
The pavement has been in service for 3 years with no visible defects, instead of annual repairs.
Rutting resistance increased more than 2.5 times compared with the conventional technology.
Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test: rut depth ≤1.5 mm / 20,000 passes.
The case showed that dry addition of Veleton MPC can be used on critically important transport arteries with extreme traffic and summer pavement overheating to +65 °C.
Around 200,000 USD a year is freed up for the city on repairs. The additional mixture cost of 12-15% was recovered within the first two years of service, after which the budget effect became a net release of funds.
“Severny Bridge has become proof that modern technologies make it possible not simply to repair roads but to create long-lasting solutions. In three years we have forgotten about the usual annual repairs.”
- Type
- Urban arterial road with extreme traffic
- Problem
- Annual repairs and rutting with the pavement heating to +65 °C
- Solutions / technology
- Veleton MPC, dry addition into A-20
- Result with Veleton
- 3 years without defects instead of annual repairs
- Rut depth / key indicator
- ≤1.5 mm / 20,000 passes
- Effect on the budget
- Payback in 2 years; around 200,000 USD a year freed up thereafter
- Additional effect
- A reduced need for annual intervention on a key transport artery of Kyiv
